Faulty design leaves its 'signature' on eway

One of the most recognisable landmarks of the city, the imposing Signature Tower is a site of regular traffic congestion at peak hours, with vehicles jostling to get past each other.
Along with Rajiv Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Shankar Chowk and Maharana Pratap Chowk, the intersection at the Signature Towers completes the scheme of traffic problems along and around the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Now, with the mammoth Athena mall — spread over 10 lakh square feet of space — coming up near the intersection opposite MDI, the future does not seem upbeat either.
"After dropping my wife at Huda City Centre Metro station, I take the Signature Tower intersection to come on to National Highway-8. I regularly get delayed as the waiting period at the junction is increasing day by day," said Devesh Jain, an executive with Munjal Showa Ltd.
Experts believe that planning glitches are at the heart of the problem at the intersection. The real issue, they believe, is the asymmetry of the road. They say vehicles hit the intersection at an angle while coming from the Maharana Pratap Chowk, thereby breaking the speed of traffic.
"The Signature Tower junction is very busy one as many vehicles come in from roads perpendicular to the expressway. The slight asymmetry of the cross-over point sometimes slows down the traffic and creates traffic bottleneck. As the concessionaire, we deploy additional traffic marshals to help police manage the traffic," said a spokesperson of DGSCL, the concessionaire managing the expressway.
"The intersection has good left turns when coming from Delhi towards Huda City Centre and from Huda City Centre towards Rajiv Chowk. But the left turns or slip roads from MDI (Old Gurgaon) towards Delhi, and from Rajiv Chowk towards MDI (Old Gurgaon) are ill-planned," said transport planner Chirag Chutani. "The lack of pedestrian facility is another problem that compounds the snarls," he added.
"I will not comment on any design fault since the road leading from Atul Kataria Chowk to Signature Towers via MDI Chowk was earlier looked after by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda).
But now we will construct a slip road for MDI-Iffco Chowk via Signature Tower traffic. A plan is under-way and we just need the forest department's clearance," said YK Garg, superintending engineer, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, which is now responsible for the intersection.
