In an incident that once again brought the issue of women’s safety into the spotlight, a second-year student was allegedly abducted from the gates of a Gurgaon college Monday morning.
The city police sprang into action, rescuing the 19-year-old woman from the Dwarka Expressway in a matter of four hours. They have arrested three men in this regard, and recovered the car used for the abduction.
Identifying the accused as Jasbir, Mangal and Vicky, all 22-year-old local residents, police said they had known the woman for the last one year. However, the student — who had come to the Dronacharya Government College for an exam — reportedly refused to lodge a complaint against the accused. Her statement was recorded by the duty magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.
“The girl is now safe at home. We have arrested three of the accused and detained them for questioning,” said Gurgaon commissioner of police Navdeep Singh Virk. He, however, said it would be “wrong” to reveal further details at that point.

Footage from a CCTV camera at the spot showed the woman struggling as she was pulled into a white Maruti Swift by a man in the rear seat. A couple of witnesses were seen giving chase to the car, but in vain. “She was walking towards the main gate when the car stopped near her. I saw a hand coming out and she was pulled inside,” said Rahul Yadav, a student.
“We rushed towards the car but they sped away,” he said.
Soon after the abduction was reported, the Gurgaon police – including officials from its crime units and cyber crime division – formed separate teams to rescue the woman. While some scrutinised her phone call records, others made enquiries at the college’s three examination centres to check for absentees. Additional personnel were rushed to Gurgaon’s Sector 4-7 Circle and Daulatabad village, two likely destinations of the abductors.
ACP (City) Anil Kumar said that though the woman had agreed to meet them at the gate, she was unaware that they would try to abduct her. The car’s number plate was reportedly coated with mud to avoid identification.
A case was registered against four persons under Section 365 (kidnapping) of the IPC.
