For Sandeep Gadoli, Mumbai was a preferred hideout and he often travelled to the city with his live-in partner, the police sources revealed.

The woman, who is a resident of Gurgaon, updated her Facebook status as soon as they checked into the hotel in Mumbai on February 6. The police had been tracking the woman’s Facebook profile. It was this constant Facebook tracking, plus a tip-off they got from Gadoli’s aide Manish Khurana, that helped the police zero in on his location.

According to the police, the gangster kept travelling from one city to another to escape the police and ran the extortion racket while on the go. Even during his stay in a city, he used to change hotels and never stayed at one place twice. But Mumbai was one of his favourite cities, the police sources said. This time when he went there, he had grand plans. He wanted to visit the Shirdi temple on Thursday and then stay in Pune for a week. But he ran out of luck and was shot dead by a team of Gurgaon police on Sunday.

The crime unit of Gurgaon got information about his Mumbai visit on the morning of February 5. The teams left Gurgaon within two hours and reached Mumbai around 7am on Sunday.

According to a police source, Khurana, a close accomplice of Gadoli’s, tipped them about his movement. Khurana had gone to Mumbai with Gadoli.

The police said Gadoli’s live-in partner was also unhappy with the gangster and wanted to get rid of him. She had been giving updates to her friends about their movement and one of these friends was in constant touch with the police.

The police said Khurana checked into room number 107 and later shifted to room number 205. A corner room was given to Gadoli.

Gadoli submitted a fake identity proof at the hotel, the police said.

Gadoli’s sister Raj Bala said, “The woman who went with my brother is Khurana’s friend. He had planned the encounter with the help of the policemen. The woman was regularly updating her status on Facebook to inform the police their location.”
