The crime branch of the Gurgaon police arrested three members of the notorious Bawaria gang on Saturday night while they were out to commit a robbery in the Bilaspur area. The members are involved in several cases of robbery, burglary, theft and chain snatching, the police said.

“They had been arrested earlier as well for chain snatching and theft across Gurgaon. They were released on bail only three months ago,” sub-inspector Surender Singh, crime branch in-charge of Bilaspur CIA, said.

The crime branch also recovered a countrymade pistol, 11 live cartridges and an auto-rickshaw from them.

Singh said that they got information that members of the Bawaria gang were planning to strike Bilaspur on Saturday night.

“We saw it as an opportunity to nab the culprits as the Bawaria gang is extremely notorious and are involved in several crimes in Gurgaon,” Singh said.

The team started patrolling and when they reached Uppal farm around 9.30 pm, they saw a suspicious auto-rickshaw parked in the dark and sensed some movement inside. The officers stopped their vehicle at a distance and surrounded the auto.

“On questioning, the three persons in the auto got scared. On searching them, we found a pistol and 11 live cartridges. We arrested them and registered a case under Arms Act,” Singh said.

The three were taken to the Bilaspur police station where they confessed to being members of the Bawaria gang and said they were involved in several cases of robbery, chain snatching and purse-snatching in the city.

The three have been identified as 25-year-old Dharambir aka Kalia, a resident of Daruhera in Rewari, 22-year-old Bunty, also a resident of Daruhera and 26-year-old Ajay from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. All three are Bawarias, a ‘criminal tribe’ classified under Criminal Tribes Act, 1871.

All three were presented before a magistrate on Sunday and sent to two-day police remand.

Sources said that while the Bawaria gang has carried out robbery, dacoity and snatching across the district, it is also suspected to be involved in the gangrape and dacoity in a factory in Pataudi in January.

Singh, however, said that the three arrested members were not involved in any rape case and were wanted in snatching and robbery cases.
