With aim to tighten the noose on liquor stores which have extended their space of their Ahatas more than what is permitted, the Haryana urban development authority (Huda) has ordered a survey to measure the areas. Ahata is a place next to a wine and liquor store where one can relax over a drink and snacks.
A week later, action would be initiated against liquor stores if found occupying space more than what is allotted to them. The Huda enforcement team has been formed to measure areas and issue the notice accordingly.
Liquor traders in the city are already facing the heat in the light of the Supreme Court order banning sale of liquor within 500 metres of the state and national highways.
Vivek Kalia, estate officer (EO-II) Huda, said that complaints of extending the ahatas of liquor shops have been received by the department.
“There are 25 wine shops and ahatas in the new Gurgaon area. While 19 wine shops are old, 6 are new. The new ones were alloted land by the Huda. The new financial year has begun and the Huda has to make an assessment of the rent amounts per wine shop afresh. So, our aim is to warn wine shop owners to confine their shops to the space allotted and we will charge from them for using extra space,” the EO-II said.
Huda leases out lands in green belts, roadside vacant spaces and elsewhere to wine shops on rent. The wine shop owners pay rents in advance for six months or a year. In areas which are within the jurisdiction of both EO I and II of the Huda, there are as many as 36 wine shops with ahatas.
About a week ago, the EO I had sent notices to all 11 wine shops to fall in line with the directive and pay rent by April 15.
“We collect lease rent from wine shops on the basis of the collector rate, which varies from area to area. It is varies from ₹1.40 lakh per square yard to ₹2 lakh or more per square yard at prime locations such as Sector 29. Despite being told to hold off on their rent payments, five of the 11 wine shops paid their lease rent on Monday and rest said they will pay in a day or two,” said HS Jakhar, sub-divisional officer (SDO), Huda.
