Gurgaon: Cabs parked illegally choke Ambience Mall-Cyber City stretch

From 4pm onwards, a beeline of cabs and private taxis start assembling on both sides of the service lane of Delhi-Gurgaon expressway between Ambience Mall and Cyber City, resulting in snarls and congestion on the 1 km stretch.
Despite regular snarls and commuter chaos, traffic police are often not found streamlining the movement of traffic on the stretch, commuters said.
Cab drivers often park their vehicles on the stretch, as there is good chance of them getting passengers. Top MNCs and corporate firms have their offices at Cyber City and the employees often turn to cabs for a ride home.
The three-lane service road already has multiple diversions and barricades leading motorists towards the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
Often, vehicles drive in the opposite direction on the stretch to head towards Ambience Mall from Cyber City or DLF Phase 3, as opposed to driving till Rajokri in New Delhi and taking a U-turn below the expressway flyover, as it cuts the length of their journey by four kilometres.
The problems for commuters have been further compounded, with cabs parked on both sides of the road and only one of the three lanes open to motorists.
“My company has offices at Connaught Place and Cyber City and I have to shuttle between the two places twice every week. The traffic situation, before entering Cyber City, is hard to deal with. Nearly 100 cabs are parked on the road and vehicles are forced to navigate the only lane accessible to them. There are no traffic police personnel or cranes (for towing illegally parked vehicles) on the spot,” Akshita Sharma, an employee of a software firm, said.
Traffic police maintained that they have been carrying out challan (spot fine) drives in the area and will cover this particular stretch in the coming days.
“We recently conducted a campaign against drunk driving near CyberHub and penalised offenders. We taken note of the commuters’ complaint over the parking of cabs on the main road and will take necessary action at the earliest,” a spokesperson for Gurgaon police said.
