Following a joint inspection of the Gurgaon railway station by the district administration and Northern Railway officials on Wednesday morning, deputy commissioner (DC) Vinay Pratap Singh proposed several changes to railway officials, including identifying a site in Gurgaon to build a new railway station.

Saying that the existing railway station is on the outskirts of Gurgaon and is difficult to access, the DC said he has recommended building a new station at a central location in the city.

“If you look at the past few decades, Gurgaon has expanded both demographically and geographically after the 1990s. The existing railway station is no longer equipped to handle the passenger load, is difficult to reach due to congestion on the approach road and its distance from the centre of the city,” Singh said.

He added that the existing railway station will coexist with the new railway station, but it needs several changes.

Some of the major changes discussed between Northern Railway and district administration officials included building a fourth platform, expanding the existing platforms, increasing the number of entry and exit points to the station (there is only one now) and decongesting the approach road to the station.

Officials also spoke about assessing a public-private partnership (PPP) model for the Gurgaon railway station to uplift the amenities and building a new foot overbridge at the platforms to handle the extra passenger load.

In June, during a stone-laying ceremony, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had said that the state government is in discussion with the Railways ministry to introduce modern facilities at the railway station and introduce new trains plying on important routes.

Last week, the state government also gave its nod to connect the Huda City Centre Metro station with the railway station through a new metro corridor.
