Gurgaon: Flyovers, underpasses are NHAI’s answers to traffic jams

Keeping in view last year’s fiasco that choked the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on July 28 and 29 and resulted in a gridlock of the entire city, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) opened a flyover at Hero Honda Chowk this week.
NHAI officials admitted that they were keen to make this road functional to ensure there is no jam during rainfall in monsoon. Apart from this, officials said that key infrastructure projects at Signature Tower, Rajiv Chowk and Iffco Chowk are also at the halfway stage and their completion will end the traffic nightmare in Gurgaon, particularly during monsoon.
To tackle waterlogging, NHAI and its contractors have also ensured that adequate manpower is made available on the ground during the rain, with equipment such as water pumps. Officials have also ensured that mobile tankers to transport excess water have sufficient fuel.
Although the measures taken by NHAI are yet to be put to the test this year, NHAI officials are confident that the opening of the flyover at Hero Honda Chowk will ensure that vehicles don’t get stuck at the crossing.
Highways officials also said that besides the Hero Honda flyover, two more projects — the underpass connecting Medanta Hospital road with Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and the Maharana Pratap flyover — will ease congestion on arterial roads as well as the main carriageway of the expressway.
“With Hero Honda Chowk flyover being opened, congestion would be much less at this crossing than witnessed before. Also, it won’t be impacted by flooding. Work on the underpass at this junction is also reaching the final stage and it will be completed by December 31,” Ashok Sharma, project director, NHAI, said.
Officials said that once the underpasses and flyovers at Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk and Signature Tower crossing are finished, it will significantly ease traffic flow.
“Once these projects are completed, it is likely that there will be a significant improvement in commuting experience across the city,” said Manoj Kumar, chief general manager of NHAI. He said that a number of additional projects are also on the anvil to decongest Gurgaon and NCR.
Jams at Shanker Chowk and Udyog Vihar are also likely to be resolved soon with the opening of the 16-lane road connecting Golf Course Road and the expressway. Also, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and NHAI are likely to build an elevated U-turn at Sirhaul toll plaza, opposite the Ambience Mall, to resolve the issue.
To meet any monsoon related exigency, the highway concessionaire MCEPL and Skylark have put in place one heavy duty pump between Khandsa and Narsinghpur, two at Ricco factory, two at Bestech Corporate Park and another at Anaj Mandi.
“All drains along the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway were cleaned using heavy duty equipment. Twelve teams comprising six members each have been deployed and mobile tankers to transport excess water are also in operation,” said Navneet Pratap Singh, CEO, Skylark, the highway operator.
“We worked in close coordination with district administration, police and other agencies to ensure that there are no jams due to waterlogging or other reasons at Hero Honda Chowk,” said S Raghuraman, CEO, MCEPL.
