As the revised deadline of the rebate scheme draws near, the move to extend the scheme till April 30 seems to have has worked in favour of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) with the civic body recovering Rs 27 crore in property tax.
MCG officials said the recovery amount can be higher as some cheque payments are still being encashed.
“The recovery of Rs 27 crore can rise further as payments made in cheques are still being processed and will be enchased soon,” SS Rohilla, MCG spokesperson, said.
On March 31, the MCG had ended its tax collection drive for 2016-17. However, following a notification by the Haryana government, it extended the deadline for payment of property tax, interest waivers and exemptions till April 30.
The MCG officials attributed the high collection to a notice that it put out on April 16, warning property tax defaulters that failure to clear dues will result in properties being sealed on May 20. In the nine days since then, the MCG collected Rs15 crore.
In addition to that, the MCG officials also sealed several properties in upscale areas of zone 4 in DLF Phase 5, DLF Phase 4 and DLF Phase 1 this month and the move fetched the civic body over Rs 1.3 crore in property tax.
Till April 30, the MCG will accept property tax with a 100% waiver on interest and a 25% rebate on arrears. Payments can be made on MCG’s official website — www.mcg.gov.in — at the citizen facilitation centres in Sector 34 and Civil Lines, through Paytm and at Axis Bank branches.
The MCG had set a target of Rs 250 crore in property tax collection for 2016-17. Till April 1, the MCG had collected Rs 294 crore in property tax. Last fiscal, the civic body had collected Rs 398 crore in property tax.
