Electrification of New Delhi-Rewari line will commence on August 12 and a foot overbridge at Rajendra Park, long awaited by residents, will also be inaugurated on the day, Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh said on Tuesday.
However, officials of the Northern Railway said the inaugurations on Saturday are ‘tentative’ and could be shifted to a later date.
The projects were scheduled to commence on Tuesday and railway minister Suresh Prabhu was to inaugurate the electrification project via video conferencing, but both had to be postponed due to the ‘tight schedule’ of Northern Railway officials.
The project for electrifying railway line from Sarai Rohilla station in New Delhi to Rewari was first put forward in the 2014-15 railway budget.
As per Northern Railway officials, the project was eventually bagged by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) after tenders were floated last year.
In the absence of an electrified line, only diesel engines can run on the line which approximately spans 85 km.
“Apart from being environment-friendly, an electric engine is also cost effective as it conserves kinetic energy every time the train brakes and continues to renew the energy source throughout the journey,” Neeraj Sharma, chief public relations officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway said.
As the operational cost will be low, the Northern Railway officials expect to add more electric multiple unit (EMU) trains on the New Delhi-Rewari route. This would provide a mass transport service option to thousands of passengers who travel daily to NCR cities for work.
Incidentally, in 2015, Rao Inderjit Singh had written to Suresh Prabhu urging him to electrify the New Delhi-Rewari and New Delhi-Jaipur route aprt from modernising the Gurgaon railway station.
As for the foot overbridge, a large number of pedestrians travelling from Rajendra Park put their lives in danger daily by crossing over the railway tracks for heading towards Sector 5. Although a foot overbridge is located at the railway station, it is restricted to passengers on platform number 2 and is inaccessible to Rajendra Park residents.
Rajendra Park is a heavily populated area located beside the Gurgaon railway station.
“More than 1 lakh people residing in Rajendra Park have trouble crossing over to Sector 5 on a daily basis. The foot overbridge will end their long wait for one and ensure their lives are no longer at risk,” the MP said.
For residents, the new foot overbridge will ensure that their gamble with life will come to an end.
“I run a grocery shop in Sector 3 since the last 20 years and. each day, I cross the railway tracks to reach there. I am well aware of the dangers and the numerous accidents that take place on railway tracks each year. But I did not have any other option as I have to support my family… The foot overbridge will finally end my family’s worry,” Praveen Yadav, a resident of Rajendra Park, said.
