Starting Saturday, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will restart its weekly cultural events featuring performances from artistes across the country.
The city has been left bereft of cultural centres since Epicentre, the city’s most popular destination for cultural events, stopped operations last December.
The last MCG cultural event was on September 30, 2016. MCG officials said the weekly events were discontinued indefinitely due to commitments in arranging statewide events such as the Haryana Swarna Jayanti in Gurgaon on November 1, 2016, for Haryana’s golden jubilee celebrations.
The event’s return this Saturday will be marked by a performance by Haryanvi singer Ashok Guddu and group.
“To promote art, cultural events and artists, the MCG has decided to start the weekly cultural events again. We want the open-air theatre to be buzzing with various kinds of events every Saturday and help renowned and aspiring artists showcase their skills through theatre, music and other performances,” said V Umashankar, MCG commissioner.
MCG officials confirmed that the weekly event will be showcased at its usual spot — the 2,000-seat amphitheatre adjoining Kingdom of Dreams in Sector 29. The events, which will start at 7.30pm, will remain free-of-cost and seats will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.
The weekly culture events had started in March 2015 with a performance of the satirical play Kambakkht Ishq. Consequent events were to be held bi-monthly, but the culture performances gained immense popularity, forcing officials to hold them weekly.
