Panic has gripped residents of Ardee city in Sector 52 after a series of thefts in the area over the last one-and-a-half months. Residents said as many as four thefts were reported in the area after Diwali, on October 19. They said all the thefts took place during the day.

The latest in the series of thefts took place on Friday evening, prompting a delegation of residents and members of the residents’ welfare association (RWA) of Ardee City to meet city police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar.

Puneet Sharma, an Ardee resident whose house was burgled, said, “The theft took place between 3pm and 7pm while we were out. On my return, I learned from RWA members and fellow residents whose houses had also been burgled that they had met the commissioner to report these incidents and demand security. I have been living in fear since the thieves broke into my house. I hope the police will bring the perpetrators to justice.”

“My house was burgled between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday. We were not at home at the time. We are living on rent here and worried. We are also considering moving out of this place, as the series of thefts of late has triggered panic among residents. The security arrangement here leaves a lot to be desired,” Pallav Mathur, another resident, said.

The RWA has written to the commissioner, demanding action against the culprits and urgent steps to boost security. Ardee City is a private residential society developed by Ardee Infrastructure Private Limited.

Praveen Yadav, president, RWA, Ardee City, said, “It’s matter of concern that despite a series of thefts, the builder has failed to improve security inside our compound. Although there are security guards deployed, they are not properly trained and are not capable of securing the society. The thefts took place during the day when the owners were away. It seems the thieves had been tracking the owners’ movements and struck while they were away. They took away both cash and jewellery. Though they have a unique modus operandi and break locks in a similar way, the police still have no clue about them. During our meeting with the commissioner, he said that some thieves are currently out on bail and they could be behind the recent incidents.”

Hindustan Times tried several times to speak with Anil Hasija, vice president, Ardee Infrastructure Private Limited, but he wasn’t available for a comment.

Mahesh Nagar, investigating officer, Sector 52 police station, said, “We are investigating these incidents and have assured residents that the culprits will be brought to book.”
