Facing trouble allegedly at the hands of drunken men driving around in SUVs near the Mall Mile on MG Road and some areas in Sector 29, the Gurgaon police has decided to deploy a dedicated officer, with powers vested with a station house officer (SHO), for MG Road and the adjoining areas to curb the increasing incidents of drunken brawls and alleged groping and harassment of women.
The police also believes that the presence of too many pubs in the area is a prime reason for such incidents.
In the wee hours of Sunday, popular Haryanvi singer Rahul Yadav, also known as Fazilpuria, was booked for drunk driving and his car was also impounded after he allegedly created a ruckus on the road.
In another incident, three-four youths in a black Scorpio tried to run over the SHO of Sector 29 in their bid to escape after being asked to pull over by the police in the wee hours of Saturday.
To prevent such incidents that have raised question marks over the level of policing in the area, the dedicated SHO will tasked with ensuring law and order in the area and deal with issues related to women’s security at night, the police said.
“An officer, with powers of a SHO, is being deployed from today to ensure law order in this area. There has been a number of incidents reported in this area of late. Drunken brawls are creating a law and order problem here,” said Deepak Saharan, DCP east. Saharan also voiced concern over the number of pubs and bars on MG Road and in Sector 29.
The official will be in charge of policing from 6pm to 4 am to ensure the road is ruckus-free.
The police will also continue its drive against drinking in public, brawls and alleged harassment of women in these areas.
Special teams have been deployed on MG Road since Friday and they have been asked to remain extra vigilant. The number of drunken driving challans issued in MG Road and Sector 29 have reached 113 over the last three days.
The police on Sunday arrested Delhi residents Sonu, Tarun and Hemant for allegedly creating a ruckus on MG Road. A case was registered against them at the DLF phase 2 police station. Another person, Vijay Yadav, was arrested for drinking in public by the DLF Phase -3 police. Another two persons, Ramesh and Gaurav, were also arrested from MG Road for drinking in public.
“The people often found in a drunken state do not accept they are inebriated and create ruckus,” Saharan said.
