Security was beefed up after the daring daylight robbery at the New Railway road branch of Mannapuram Finance in Old Gurgaon on Thursday. Gurgaon police have also released the pictures of armed robbers who had carried out the robbery.
Three of the robbers who could be spotted in the footage appear to be in their twenties and are seen wearing jeans and leather jackets. Two of them can be seen holding pistols in their hand while confidently moving inside the branch.
Robbers struck at the company’s branch around 11 am, and decamped with 33 kg gold valued at Rs 10 crore and 8 lakh in cash after holding the staffers hostage for over half-an-hour.
Gurgaon police set up barricades and check points inside the city, and on the borders to nab the culprits who have been identified through the CCTV footage, police said. The police also released the pictures of three robbers in the hope that they could be identified and information obtained on them.
However, there was panic as soon as the news about the robbery spread across the city. Dozens of customers thronged the firm’s office to know when they can get their precious metal back.
Many anxious investors were not aware where to go and what to do. They kept calling the police and the company regarding the insurance claims and the future of their saving.
“I have deposited the gold in this branch and came here after hearing about the robbery. Are we going to get the gold back”, said a customer, who had come from Jacompura, after learning about the incident. The customers were worried and wanted to know the process of insurance claim.
Although, the customers were not allowed inside the office, they were asked to leave their details with an employee.
The staff was not in position to talk as they were shaken after seeing one of their guards and few customers being hit with knives.
Devicharan, a guard, who was held hostage said that the assailants spoke Hindi and threatened everyone with knives. “Everyone was scared after they attacked the other guard. The customers were jittery”, he said.
The family members of a woman employee also rushed to the spot after hearing about the incident. “My sister’s daughter works in this office and we were worried about her well being. It was harrowing to know that armed criminals had kept the employees hostage. My sister’s daughter, too, was held captive,” she said, preferring anonymity.
In a bid to ensure jittery customers, Mannapuram Finance Ltd issued a statement saying that the gold jewellery kept in the branch is fully insured and that the affected customers will not suffer any loss in the light of the incident.
“We want to reassure our customers that they won’t bear any loss as their gold is insured. The company will return every ounce of gold deposited by customers,” said Sreenivasa Behara, general manager and chief public relations officer, Mannapuram Finance Ltd.
Gurgaon police, meanwhile, said that they are on working on different leads, collected forensic evidence and formed teams to nab the culprits. Sandeep Khirwar, Gurgaon police commissioner also rushed to the spot to inspect the premises on New Railway Road.
Bijender Singh Hooda, SHO Civil Lines station, said that the police team has gone through the CCTV footage and those involved have been identified. “We are working on different leads and mobile call records are also being examined to get information about the culprits,” he said.
