With a view to highlighting the journey of transportation since the invention of the wheel, possibly during the late Neolithic, the postal department has issued stamps on the theme ‘means of transport through the ages’. The stamps were showcased at the Heritage Transport Museum on Saturday.
Around 20 postage stamps were released to provide a glimpse of the gradual progression in the modes of transportation in the country.
The series of stamps include a set of four stamps, each on palanquins, animal driven carriages and carts, rickshaws and vintage cars. A mixed set of four stamps on public transport depicting buses, tram and metro were also released.
The images of 15 of 20 stamps released by the Department of Post were directly adopted from the museum’s collection.
“The 20 postage stamps that depict the gradual progression in the modes of transport in our country will act as a catalyst to reconnect people with India’s history, art and heritage. Images for the stamps were directly adopted from the museum’s collection and it is an incredible honour for us,” Tarun Thakral, managing trustee, Heritage Transport Museum, said.
The management of the museum said these stamps will act as a catalyst to reconnect people with the country’s history, art, culture and heritage.
The transport museum located in Manesar, around 50 km from the city, was set up in December 2013 and conceptualised by Tarun Thakral.
From the phaeton to the Ambassador, the Humber Pullman, the Plymouth Savoy and others are all perfect examples of rapid expansion in the field of transportation as showcased in the museum.
