Crime branch officials, on Sunday night, arrested Rahul, the aide of gangster Rajesh alias Gorkha, who was arrested on Sunday afternoon from near Vatika Next, Sector 88. Rahul had managed to flee during the shootout on Dwarka Expressway, in which Rajesh was injured and arrested for the alleged murder of his cousin on July 18.

Police said Rahul, identified only by his first name, was arrested from near Sector 10. Inspector Manoj Verma, from the Palam Vihar crime branch, said Rahul is in his early 20s and does not have a criminal record.

“Rajesh, who is accused of being involved in the murder of his property dealer cousin Mahesh Kumar Yadav, had recruited Rahul to attack his brother. The motive was to end a property feud within the family,” Verma said.

Police said Rahul would be produced in the district court on Tuesday and interrogated in police custody.

On July 18, Yadav was shot dead by five persons in Sarai Alawardi near Palam Vihar after he had helped his nine-year-old twins and nephew board the school bus around 6.30am. The attackers fired seven rounds at him.

On Sunday, Rajesh and Rahul were on their way to Daulatabad on a motorcycle when they were intercepted at a check-point near Sector 88. When the two saw the police, they turned around and tried to escape through a non-motorable road, but were chased down by the police. While Rajesh suffered a gunshot wound in his left calf and was arrested, his aide Rahul managed to escape.

Rajesh allegedly fired four rounds at the police before his semi-automatic gun jammed and he was nabbed. A motorcycle and a 9mm pistol were recovered from the accused.

Verma said the police could not record Rajesh’s statement on Monday as well as he was being kept under observation at the government hospital in Sector 10.
