A nine-year-old girl suffered serious injuries on stomach as her large intestine was severed when the neighbour’s Rottweiler pounced on her. The girl also sustained injuries on the back and one of her ribs was fractured.
The incident happened on February 25 at Baghanki village in Manesar, 55km from Gurgaon. The matter came to light when the police filed an FIR on the complaint of Vikram Yadav, victim’s father, against the dog owner.
Injuries were so critical that the girl had to be operated upon. Member of a medical team attending on her said that her large intestine was cut and had to be surgically restored. “She sustained rib fracture and plastic surgery was required on her stomach. We think she could be discharged after four days,” said a doctor.
Vikram, who runs a dhaba at Panchgaon, said her daughter was playing in the compound when the Rottweiler caught hold of her through the loose wires of the fence. “My mother was also with the girl but the dog attacked her. It left her when other family members rushed to her rescue,” Vikram told HT.
He claimed that so far Rs 1.25 lakh have been incurred on medical treatment at Rockland hospital in Manesar where the girl is still admitted. “We pleaded with the dog owner to bear medical expenses but he refused. We then filed a police complaint,” said Vikram. He alleged that his neighbours have many dogs, which they have kept illegally.
Rajesh Yadav, younger brother of accused Rakesh Yadav who is a farmer, said the charges are baseless. He said the family was offered initial financial assistance of Rs 60,000 but they refused and demanded more money. Rakesh was not available for comments.
“We are ready to cooperate and offered them Rs 60,000 initially. We also offered to bear small medical expenses, but the family demanded more money which is beyond our capacity,” said Rajesh, an employee in the electricity department.
He said the girl along with her grandmother came to pick vegetables from his kitchen garden. “They came from the behind our house where our dog was tied. A stray dog was accompanying them because of which our dog got furious and broke the rope. The stray dog fled but the girl couldn’t,” he said.
Rajesh said they have one dog of German breed and two of indigenous breed. He denied breeding dogs for commercial purposes.
Rakesh Yadav was booked under section 289 (negligent conduct with respect to animal) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC at Manesar police station on Tuesday.
Jagdish Prasad, SHO Manesar police station, said the condition of the girl was serious, though she is out of danger now. He said the accused are being questioned and appropriate action would be taken.
