Three persons were arrested for illegally collecting toll on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway ahead of the Sirhaul toll plaza by a team of Gurgaon traffic police.
The accused were allegedly standing roadside and stopping commercial vehicles and asking them to pay toll without authorisation at the point just ahead of the spot where the toll company appointed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) collect fees just ahead of the now defunct toll.
According to the police, the accused were identified as Rakesh Kumar, Mukesh Chand and Manzoor Ali.
A Bolero with a Rajasthan registration number was seized from them. The police also recovered few sticks from the vehicle and other documents as well.
An official of the Udyog Vihar police station said that a case under sections 283 and 384 of the Indian Penal Code have been registered against the accused. They apparently stood in the middle of the highway and forced people to pay toll fees, which often was in excess of the approved rates, he said.
The MCD toll at Delhi Gurgaon expressway collects toll fees and also the green tax from commercial vehicles entering Delhi. The toll point has turned into a choke point for vehicles, as major traffic jams are caused at this point particularly during the peak hours in the evening when thousands of cars leave the city as office-goers return to their Delhi homes.
