Gurgaon to get intelligent traffic signals at three junctions

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, in collaboration with a Japanese firm, will install the Integrated Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) on three crossings that experience heavy traffic.
The project will provide relief to commuters, helping them save time and ensuring a smoother ride.
ITS will be installed at Genpact crossing on the Golf Course road, Ghata crossing and Kachra chowk on the Gurgaon Faridabad road.
ITS helps change traffic lights automatically, based on traffic volume, saving time for commuters and eliminating possible errors by traffic police in assessing traffic load.
ITS will also assist commuters by giving them information about traffic density on these road stretches in advance, helping them avoid congested routes and choosing alternate routes to reach their destination.
To initiate the traffic signal change process, there are induction loops (coils of wire embedded in the road’s surface) on these stretches.
When a vehicle passes over the loop, it induces currents depending on its speed, which in turn sends a pulse to the traffic signal controller signifying the passage or presence of a vehicle.
Hence, determining the volume of traffic on a certain stretch and changing the traffic light becomes easy.
The processed information is sent to a control centre with a cloud database, which, initially will be monitored by the Japanese firm Kyosan India Private Limited.
The technology also collects live traffic volume update through infrared camera sensors installed on streetlights fitted with wi-fi hotspot connection.
For a commuter, large LED screens will flash information on the traffic situation 400-800m before the crossings, helping commuters make on- the-spot decisions and take alternate routes, if needed.
“Most crossings in the city face shortage of manpower (traffic police constables) to manage traffic. Once implemented, the ITS system will eliminate deficiencies of the existing traffic system and create an optimal traffic flow model,” said Joint Commissioner MCG, Rohit Yadav.
Work on the project will start by the end of this month.
For three months, the Japanese agency will overlook the project. Afterwards, a project report will be submitted before the MCG officials and a decision to replicate the system on other busy stretches will be taken.
The MCG is also looking towards CSR initiative by private companies to cover the project costs, officials said.
