A study, commissioned by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), to check the feasibility of constructing an underpass near the congested Signature Tower crossing on Gurgaon Expressway has concluded that the underpass is the only way to streamline traffic flow here.
“Traffic volume has increased manifold and can’t be managed by deploying a few more traffic constables or putting some extra traffic signals. The traffic police have been doing their best but the long queues cannot be reduced unless surface traffic is segregated by creating an underpass,” said the architect and private consultant, who was involved in the study, on condition of anonymity as the official report is yet to be submitted to MCG.
The corporation had on June 15 commissioned the traffic study and preparation of a feasibility report for the underpass. The consultant is likely to submit the study report and the feasibility report to MCG in the next couple of days.
“The flow of traffic can broadly be divided into two groups — one, coming from Huda City Centre and going towards Iffco Chowk from under the Signature Tower flyover and the other coming from Atul Kataria Chowk and going towards Rajiv Chowk from under the flyover. This matter and the construction of the underpass will be discussed with the National Highways Authority of India and only after that we can confirm it,” said a senior MCG official.
On Friday, the study team inspected the 2-km stretch from Atul Kataria Chowk to Huda City Centre Metro station and surveyed the sites where underpasses have been proposed.
“We are likely to hold a meeting with NHAI officials soon,” said Rajesh Bansal, executive engineer, MCG.
