The police on Monday arrested a man on charges of murder after his 39-year-old wife died after falling from the window of their second floor house in Nai Basti, New Colony, on Saturday night. The police said the woman’s son alleged that his father and grandmother pushed her out of the window after a confrontation and killed her.
According to the police, the incident took place on Saturday around 9.30pm when the woman, Seema Gandhi, a homemaker, was on the second floor of the house with her husband, Prem Prakash Gandhi, and her mother-in-law, Shakuntala Devi.
The woman’s 19-year-old son, Sourav Gandhi, told the police in the complaint that he heard a loud thud and rushed outside the house to check. “I saw my mother lying on the ground. My father and grandmother were standing near the window on the second floor and came downstairs, but made no effort to help her,” Sourav, a student of Class 12, said.
The police said Seema was taken to a private hospital on new railway road, but since she was critical, she was referred to another private hospital in Sector 51, where she died under treatment on Sunday.
According to a police officer privy to the investigation (who wished to remain anonymous), her husband suspected her of infidelity and had allegedly threatened to kill her on an earlier occasion.
Sourav said that there was tension in the house due to frequent confrontations. “My father and grandmother fought with my mother and abused her repeatedly. He had also threatened to kill her and due to this reason, she often stayed at my maternal uncle’s house in Karnal. She had returned 20 days ago to the house, and since then, every day, my grandmother would harass her. My grandmother and father would restrict her from going outside. On the day of the incident, they had been fighting since morning,” Sourav said, adding that he had recorded some of the alleged altercations on his mobile phone.
The police said they were probing if Seema was pushed or had jumped from the second-floor window of her own volition.
“There are no eyewitnesses. On the basis of her son’s complaint, we have booked Prem Prakash and Shakuntala Devi. A preliminary probe has found that he suspected her of infidelity and the couple often fought. His mother took his side, which was also a note of discontent between Seema and her mother-in-law. Sourav acted as a mediator during fights,” Jagdev, sub inspector (SI), said.
Prem Prakash, who runs a stall of acupuncture goods in Sector 14, was arrested on Monday. Shakuntala Devi, is yet to be arrested, the police said.
A case was registered against them under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code at New Colony police station, the police said.
