A 74-year-old woman was allegedly duped into parting with her gold bangles in DLF Phase-2 by two persons posing as police. This is the second such incident reported in a week.
The police said they suspect the role of a set of people, known as the Irani gang. The gang members pose as police and target elderly people between 4pm and 5pm when there are few people on the roads, the police said.
Shashi Mehra, a social worker, was walking on the street near her house around 4pm on Friday when two men stopped her, identified themselves as police and also showed her ID cards. They told her that the station house officer was inspecting the area as robberies had increased and told her not to wear gold jewellery.
Mehra said she was suspicious of them as they were in civil clothes and she had heard that a similar incident had taken place a few days ago. She alleged that the two forced her to remove her bangles, wrapped them in a paper and asked her to put it in her bag.
She said that when she checked the bangles, they turned out to be fake. Mehra said that the street was also deserted at the time of the incident.
“They had also stopped a man and asked him to remove his chain on the same pretext. The man offered little resistance and handed them his chain. He might have been their accomplice,” said Mehra.
On her complaint, the DLF Phase-2 police filed an FIR under sections 379 (theft) and 420 (fraud) of the IPC.
On Saturday, Uma Kedia of Sushant Lok had reported a similar incident to the police. She was allegedly duped by two persons while she was going to Sushant Lok Vyapar Kendra market on Friday evening.
Deepak Saharan, the deputy commissioner of police (east), said that a team of police and crime branch has been formed to trace the gang. He said that patrolling has also been increased in the area.
