Former national Hockey team captain Mohammad Shahid, who is undergoing treatment for a liver and kidney ailment, is recovering at Medanta - the Medicity.
The 56-year-old legend, who was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday night, started speaking with his family and visitors on Sunday morning.
“He underwent dialysis on Sunday evening after which his health has started improving,” said his 26-year-old son Mohammad Saif, who is a student at Varanasi’s DAV College.
Apart from Shahid’s striking partner and former Indian Hockey team captain Zafar Iqbal, Shahid’s wife Parveen Shahid, son Mohammad Saif and daughter Heena Shahid interacted with him at the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), among other friends and relatives.
“Thankfully, he seems to be recovering fast. Doctors told us that his condition is better than before,” said Parveen, his wife.
On Saturday, Union sports minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced a grant of `10 lakh for Shahid, who also brought an Olympic gold medal for India in 1980.
“All medical expenses for Mohd Shahid will be reimbursed + `10 lakh from @YASMinistry at immediate disposal for overhead expenses. (sic),” the minister tweeted after visiting Shahid.
Besides, the Railways, where Shahid is an employee, has announced that his medical expenses will be taken care of.
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Union minister of state for Information and Broadcasting, also visited Shahid on Saturday.
Known for his dribbling skills, Shahid is considered one of India’s great hockey players. He was a member of the V Baskaran and also led the Indian team that won a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He was also a part of the national team that won a silver medal at the Delhi Asiad in 1982 and bronze in the Seoul Asiad in 1986.
He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 1981 and awarded Padma Shri in 1986. He is posted at the Diesel Loco Works factory in Varanasi since 1996.
Shahid’s family said that he complained of stomachache in Varanasi after which he was rushed to Sir Sunder Lal (SSL) Hospital in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for a check-up. He has been recovering from jaundice over the past month and was shifted from Varanasi to Medanta on Wednesday.
