Areas along Metro corridors are likely to be developed as multi-utility complexes with residential and commercial units.
The Union Urban Development ministry wants transit-oriented growth along Metro tracks. To start with, a seven-km stretch along the Gurgaon metro corridor may be taken up for development.
The ministry has asked Delhi Metro to conduct a detailed feasibility study along the Metro stretch between Chhattarpur and Arjangarh for the development of a multi-modal inter-change and street connectivity.
The Delhi Metro has already started work on the proposal and awarded the tender to a specialised agency to conceptualise the design for stage-I of the project.
According to sources, the project would help generate revenue for further expansion of the Metro network.
"Transit-oriented development is essential and Metro is a prime mover of mass transit-oriented development in the country. We need to adapt economical models of development, the fruits of which should be equally distributed," Urban Development Secretary Sudhir Krishna said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The scope of the feasibility study has been confined to 1,500 metres of catchment areas from Delhi Metro stations such as Chhattarpur, Sultanpur and Arjangarh where development of commercial and residential complexes could be considered.
The Centre is also mulling to increase tax burden on people living close to Metro corridors. It has asked state governments to explore the option of imposing dedicated tax as part of innovative methods to finance such modern transport projects.
