Residents of Gurgaon have been raising their voice against illegal mobile towers in their localities. While some have been successful in dismantling the towers by protesting or writing to authorities, others refuse to give up hope.
On the other hand, even after declaring almost all mobile towers in the city illegal, the Municipal Cor poration of Gurgaon (MCG) has not been able to curb the violation.
A common thing all residents complained about is that when authorities admit that these towers are illegal, why is permission given for erecting them in the first place?
MC Yadav, a resident of Sector 31, said that their continuous protest by writing to the authority did bear some fruits as the work of erecting a mobile tower in the area was stopped. But he said that the authority must take stringent action against the owners of the illegal towers.
“A notice was given to the private company. However, when the norms state that they have to maintain a minimum radius of 100m from houses, schools and hospitals, there are many towers merely 10m away from our houses, threatening human life. We have been complaining about this issue for long now. We will keep bringing it to the notice of the authorities till they dismantle them,” said Yadav.
Recently, two towers were removed from Sushant Lok 1 after a week-long protest by residents.
Meanwhile, admitting that there are illegal mobile towers in the city, joint commissioner YS Gupta said that they cannot do much as private companies seek stay orders from the court regarding the removal of the towers.
“It takes us time to take action against the offenders as most mobile towers have status quo from different courts,” said Gupta.
During checking of communication towers by MCG after various complaints, the report states that the radiations are much below the safe limit of radiations fixed by the ministry of communications and IT, department of telecommunications and telecom enforcement.
MCG had checked mobile towers in more than 30 residential areas across the city.
