The Great Khali’s Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) event scheduled to be held in Gurgaon on October 8 has been cancelled in view of security reasons. Tau Devi Lal stadium, where the event was scheduled, is required for inaugural function of Haryana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on November 1 where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be chief guest.
Second leg of the event in Panipat will be held on its scheduled date of October 12. 43-year-old Dalip Singh Rana, better known by his ring name The Great Khali, cited issues with international wrestlers’ visa and non-satisfactory sale of tickets as reasons for cancellation of Gurgaon event.
Official sources, however, said the event was cancelled following state government’s advisory to the organisers. The event was jointly planned by CWE and the state government. The government even decided to waive off entertainment tax for the event to promote sports.
“The stadium has been taken over by the administration to prepare for November 1 event. PM will attend the function and the stadium is out of bound for any other event till November 1. The organisers agreed to the fact and decided to cancel the wrestling event” said a senior government official seeking anonymity.
About 14 male and female wrestlers from countries like USA, Canada, South Africa and Mexico were expected to participate in the event.
Confirming cancelation of Gurgaon event, Khali said Panipat show would be held as scheduled.
“The event was supposed to be organised in Gurgaon on October 8. However, we have postponed the event as there are issues in getting visa by the international wrestlers. Also the ticket sales were not satisfactory” said Khali, 7.3 feet tall former WWE world heavyweight champion.
Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar was expected to inaugurate the wrestling event at Tau Devi Lal Stadium. The event was aimed at promoting wrestling in the state.
Continental Wrestling Entertainment Private Limited, an academy to produce wrestling-entertainment stars, has been operational since January 25, 2015 in Punjab and from February in Uttarakhand.
