KMP contractor threatens self-immolation over dues
The owner of a private construction company has threatened to set himself on fire if the KMP Expressway concessionaire does not clear dues worth R97 lakh by May 23. Dhananjay Jha reports.gurgaon Updated: May 15, 2013 02:16 IST
The owner of a private construction company has threatened to set himself on fire if the KMP Expressway concessionaire does not clear dues worth R97 lakh by May 23.
According to Dharamvir Singh, the owner of Dharma Enterprise Private Ltd, KMP Expressway Limited, which is the concessionaire of the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, has not paid the tender amount (R97 lakh) to his company for carrying out earth-filling work on a 9-km stretch of the expressway in Gurgaon district.
Singh wrote a letter to Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal on May 8 and gave a 15 days’ ultimatum, seeking his intervention.
“I started my work with this company on 2009 and completed the work in 2011. After that, the company had to pay R97 lakh to my company. My company has gone bankrupt. We have taken loans from banks and we have not even paid salaries to our workers. I have no choice now but to commit suicide,” said Singh.
The threat of self-immolation has created panic and the concessionaire has swung into action.
“We are aware of the threat. We have spoken with Dharamvir Singh and his father and are trying our best to settle the matter as early as possible. The money will definitely be paid to him,” said a spokesperson of the company.
The spokesperson, however, did not reveal why the money was not paid even after completion of work by Dharma Enterprises in 2011.
The KMP Expressway — a much-hyped project of the Haryana government — has already missed two deadlines and completion still seems a far cry.
The 136-km expressway loop around the national capital region (NCR) will provide high-speed connectivity and decongest New Delhi — KMP takes off from the National Highway-1 near Kundli (Sonepat) and joins Delhi-Faridabad-Agra NH-2 near Palwal. Delayed by more than three years, 68.69% of the project was complete as on January 31, 2013.
