The labrador, Yoda, that underwent blood transfusion on Monday for low platelet count, died on Wednesday.
Over 50 pet owners had offered their dog’s blood for Yoda after seeing a Facebook post by his owners, seeking help. However, he could not be saved from tick fever despite the transfusion.
“Everyone wanted to help Yoda and was praying for his speedy recovery but he did not survive,” Mitali Khanna, one of the owner’s said.
On Monday morning, a member of the Khanna family from Sector 49, requested dog owners and animal lovers to donate their pet’s blood and save the life of two-year-old Yoda.
The Facebook post was widely circulated and received more than 3,500 shares and hundreds of comments.
Residents across Delhi-NCR came forward with their pets to help Yoda. Others, unknown to the family, consoled them on phone after seeing the post.
Veena Lal from Faridabad, who had pledged the blood of her dog, said, “I do not know what to say about his death. I felt emotionally connected to Yoda and decided to donate my dog’s (Kaddu) blood.”
Yoda was suffering from tick fever for the last few of days. His condition worsened on Monday, when he was rushed to a nearby hospital. To worsen the situation, his blood platelet count also dropped.
“Thank you for teaching me what it is to be unabashedly loving and selfless..To everyone who reached out, please hold your babies for me, and let them know they are loved. My family and I are infinitely grateful. Our home will never be the same,” a Facebook post by Ruhani Khanna on Tuesday morning said.
