A 30-year-old man, an executive with a private firm in the city, was booked on Friday night for allegedly raping a colleague on the pretext of marriage for over a year, the police said on Saturday.

A 24-year-old woman, in her complaint, told the police that she has been working with a leading company in the city for the last one year. At her workplace, she met the accused who helped her ease into the new work environment. According to the complaint, he befriended her and invited her to his house in DLF Phase 3 on the pretext of a birthday party—of his roommate’s.

Usha Kundu, assistant commissioner of police (crime against women), said, “When the woman reached the house of the accused, she found that he was alone in the apartment. When she enquired about his roommates, he allegedly said they had gone to get snacks and cake for the party. The woman alleged that she was offered an alcoholic beverage, laced with sedatives, and she fell unconscious after she had the drink.”

The woman told the police in her complaint that when she regained consciousness, she realised that she had been raped and confronted the accused, after which he apologised and promised to marry her.

The woman, in her complaint, said the accused maintained physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage for over a year. Later, when she asked him to marry her, he refused, after which she lodged a complaint against the accused on Friday evening at women’s police station in Sector 51.

Kundu said the police have registered a case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused. The police have launched a manhunt to the arrest the accused.
