A 22-year-old man, a Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) graduate, was on Thursday held on charges of murdering his 26-year-old live-in partner at a flat in Vandana Enclave, Khoda, on the suspicion that she was dating someone else.
The man, Shivam Birdi, and the woman, Jyoti Verma, hailed from Jalandhar, Punjab.
Police said for nearly 72 hours after stabbing her to death on the intervening night of June 9 and 10, the man stayed in the flat with the rotting body. He later hired a car from a self-drive rental company and planned to dispose of her body in Punjab.
His plan went awry when around 12.30am on June 13, locals noticed the foul smell emanating from the suitcase kept in the car. They questioned him and he fled the spot on foot. The residents informed the police, who recovered the body.
The police said Birdi became suspicious of Verma, a beautician at the Habitat Centre in Indirapuram, increasingly got late in reaching home after work.
“He was suspicious of her arriving late from work. He tried to check her phone but she rebuked him. This led an argument on the night of June 9, during which the accused stabbed her in the abdomen with a knife. She bled to death,” Vaibhav Krishna, SSP, Ghaziabad, said.
“He later packed her body in the suitcase and stayed in the flat with it for three days. He planned to dispose of it in Punjab and around 12.30am on June 13, he put the suitcase in the car. But locals noticed the foul smell and questioned him. He fled the spot and they informed the police,” the SSP said.
Police arrested Birdi from Labour Chowk and recovered the knife from his possession.
The accused said that they were staying together for the past nine months in a rented flat in Vandana Enclave. Birdi came to Ghaziabad last August, after he got his first job, and Verma joined him in October.
On the night of the incident, Birdi was drunk and wanted to see her mobile phone and a fight ensued. “I stabbed her in a fit of rage and she bled heavily. I put my hand on her mouth as she was screaming. Later, she died. I saw the suitcase and stuffed her body inside. I repented killing her but there was nothing I could do. I lit incense sticks to mask the smell. Around 12.30pm, on June 12, I hired a car and waited for night to fall. I snapped the CCTV camera wires while taking out the suitcase. As soon as I put the body in the car, locals caught me and I had to run away,” he said.
