Rajesh Kumar, who allegedly molested the 19-year-old woman who was later gang raped in Manesar on May 29, had earlier served five years in prison in Bulandshahr on attempt to murder charges.
Kumar, a truck driver in his late 40s, served his prison term till 2013. He had shot at 25-year-old Jitu Kumar in 2008 in Hasanpur, a village in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, due to an enmity with Jitu and his brother Sudhir Kumar.
Kumar too belongs to Hasanpur village in Bulandshahr. Coincidentally, the three accused in the gang-rape case are also from Bulandshahr, but from Rungsi village.
“A case was registered against Kumar in 2008 in Jahangirpur police station, around 5 km from Hasanpur, under Section 307(a) (shooting with the intention of killing). After his conviction, Rajesh was handed a five-year jail sentence,” said Pratap Singh, station house officer (SHO), Jahangirpur police station.
Dharamvir Singh, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Manesar, said the Bulandshahr police told them about the 2008 case against Kumar.
“We have asked the Bulandshahr police to find out if there are more cases against him,” Singh said.
Kumar, who was allegedly drunk on the night of May 29, had offered a lift to the 19-year-old woman from near Bas Kusla village and then allegedly molested her — a crime he has confessed to the police.
Due to this assault, the woman had to escape his truck along with her eight-month-old daughter at IMT Manesar chowk and approach three men drinking nearby for help.
The three men, Yogender Kumar, Amit Meena, and Jaikesh Singh, pretended to help her and even beat up the truck driver, but they later took her to an isolated spot and allegedly took turns to rape her. They also allegedly killed her infant daughter.
Kumar was arrested from Begumpur Khatola village near Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on June 9. He has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
