Taking a lesson from the post-shower chaos and waterlogging in the city a fortnight ago, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has braced itself and initiated steps for better handling of flood-like situations in times to come.
The MCG is likely to invite experts, non-government organisations (NGOs) and residents' welfare associations (RWAs) in formulating a plan to handle any disaster-like situation in the city. It is learnt that a meeting in this regard is expected to take place shortly.
"I guess we will have two meetings in this regard in a week's time. I am likely to hold a meeting with my own staff first and then I will hold a meeting with the experts, the NGO representatives and the residents," said MCG commissioner Ashok Sangwan.
Sangwan, meanwhile, has sought the current strength detail information of the corporation from the superintending engineer (SE), YK Garg. The commissioner has also sought data about areas and roads in the city prone to waterlogging.
"I have sought details about diesel gen-sets in use and our manpower strength. I will also consult experts and formulate a plan to handle any calamity,"said Sangwan, conceding that the heavy showers a fortnight ago had caused severe waterlogging in several parts of the city.
It is worth noticing that neither the MCG nor the Haryana Urban Development Authority has the capacity to drain out water from the streets and properties in case heavy rains take place for a long duration of time, inundating the low-lying areas.
"We have 37 villages and hundreds of old localities and now the entire city has come under the corporation jurisdiction. We must be in a position to manage a flood-like situation and waterlogging in the entire city," said the corporation commissioner.
