In a big relief to commuters on Wednesday, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) opened an elevated U-turn from MG Road to Delhi at Iffco Chowk on trial run basis.
Commuters from MG Road, Essel Tower, DLF II and Iffco Chowk Metro Station can use this U-turn to go straight towards Delhi or take a left immediately after getting down from the flyover towards Sukhrali on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road.
At Iffco Chowk, another elevated U-turn is under construction on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway behind ABW Tower. Commuters from Sukhrali can use this U-turn to cross the expressway and go straight towards Manesar or take a left towards MG Road.
“It brought me great pleasure to use this U-turn. This is going to put an end to congestion at Iffco Chowk,” said Satish Solanki, a resident of Sector 17.
Earlier, on July 24, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar had inaugurated Hero Honda Chowk Flyover. This was followed by the inauguration of Medanta U-turn and Maharana Pratap Chowk flyover on August 14 by Union minister Nitin Gadkari. On June 17, Haryana CM inaugurated Basai Railway over bridge on Dwarka Expressway.
Apart from two elevated U-turns, the NHAI is currently working on an underground U-turn on MG Road and an elevated road at Iffco Chowk that commuters coming from Delhi can use to avoid the surface traffic of Iffco Chowk and head straight towards Manesar. The NHAI is also building underpasses at Signature Tower, Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk.
Ashok Kumar Sharma, project director, NHAI, said, “All these projects are almost complete and we hope they will be ready for use by end of the year. The NHAI will open all these projects to commuters by December 31.”
The construction of flyovers, U-turns and underpass at Iffco Chowk are primarily aimed at easing congestion.
“Passenger car unit (PCU) per hour at Iffco Chowk is roughly 20,000 vehicle, which is an indication of high congestion. This is why we planned two U-turns, one elevated road and an underpass,” Sharma said.
The NHAI planned the projects at Rajiv Chowk, Signature Tower junction and Iffco chowk in August 2014 and work began two years later in September 2016. The NHAI had set a deadline for 15 months for these projects and they will be built at a cost of ₹1,000 crore.
For the NHAI and Gurgaon police, the congestion at Iffco Chowk has always been a challenge due to convergence of vehicular traffic in an irregular manner.
“The NHAI’s work has been delayed, as the local authorities could not hand over lands at Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk and Iffco Chowk on time,” Sharma said, adding that these projects would reduce Gurgaon’s congestion to a significant extent.
