The Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI) will be hosting the 14th National Ice Skating Championship in Gurgaon on October 1 and 2.
The competition will be reserved for skaters in the figure skating category and may also prove to be a stepping stone for a spot to next year’s Winter Olympics at Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Over 100 ice skaters will be participating at the event to be held at iSKATE in Ambience Mall. They will compete inside a 450 square feet artificial rink.
Figure skating is a competition in which a skater’s the ability to perform aerobatics and manoeuvres on the ice, which is assessed by judges.
More than half of the competitors featuring in the competition are from the southern part of India from states such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The competition is divided between boys and girls and further categorised into five levels based on the ages of contestants.
The event will be judged Jagraj Singh Sahni, ice skating coach, and Vasudeva Sharma, who represented India in roller and ice skating competitions and has bagged two bronze medals in the Asian Games.
The two will also train skaters prior to the competition in a camp between September 25 and 30.
Earlier this year, owing to low snowfall in Shimla, where the ice skating rink was natural, the competition had to be moved at the last minute to Gurgaon.
“I got a chance to have a glimpse of the competition two years ago in Shimla and was totally awestruck by the performances. The level of performance was so intense that it made me extremely excited as a viewer. I will visit the competition this year again and extend my support to the competitors,” Anmol Sikund, a resident of DLF Phase-3, said.
