A two-hour search by the bomb disposal squad and a sniffer dog could not find even a single cartridge shell from the spot in Police Lines complex where the wife of chief judicial magistrate Ravneet Garg was found dead on Wednesday.
All efforts at locating the shells proved futile even as ballistic reports said that all three bullets fired from the .32 revolver owned by the judge had pierced through the deceased and fallen on the ground.
One of the investigating officers, who is not authorised to speak with the media, said on conditions of anonymity that there was a heap of debris mixed with metal particles on the spot where the body was found and it was very difficult for the team to spot the cartridge shells there.
What further deepens the mystery about the death of 24-year-old Geetanjali is the fact that none of the 400 police personnel, who were stationed in the Police Lines complex following mounting tension in nearby Manesar, could hear any gunshots.
The group was being briefed by its seniors, including deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Surinder Pal, at a distance of just about 100 metres from the crime scene, at around 5pm when the gunshots were believed to have been fired on Wednesday.
Also, nobody from the 700 families living in the Police Lines complex heard the gunshots.
The spot where the body of the woman was found is hardly 7-8 metres away from the city police station that shares its wall with Police Lines complex and none from the station heard the shots either.
The site where the body was found has also perplexed the police. It was spotted near a bush where repair work on walkways was underway and it was learnt that generally morning/evening walkers avoid taking that path. The body was spotted by some children playing in the ground around 6pm.
