A 22-year-old died and two others were injured when a mentally challenged man attacked them at his house in New Palam Vihar on Monday around 9:20 pm, police said. The man was being taken to a rehabilitation centre in New Delhi and the alleged incident took place when the victims tried to help put him in an ambulance.
The deceased, identified as Manjeet Singh (22), was a resident of N block in New Palam Vihar where he lived with his family. A case has been registered at Palam Vihar police station under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
According to the police, the incident took place when the perpetrator, Vikash Salman (42), refused to enter the ambulance called by a relative to take him to the rehabilitation centre on Monday night.
Unable to convince him to go, Salman’s relative called some neighbours for assistance. Singh and his friend Deepak Kumar decided to help and came to Salman’s home, according to the police. They tried to forcefully take him to the ambulance, which infuriated Salman. He took a knife lying on a table and stabbed the two. An attendant of the ambulance, Dheeraj Yadav, was also injured trying to help the duo, police said.
“Singh was critically injured as the knife cut into the left side of his chest and he started bleeding heavily. He was taken to a private hospital in Palam Vihar, where he was declared brought dead,” said inspector Sandeep Kumar, SHO, Palam Vihar police station.
The hospital informed the police control room and a PCR van reached the spot, police said.
The body was sent for a postmortem examination at the civil hospital. Singh’s relatives and family members are awaiting the postmortem report and will be taking the body to their village in Silani, Jhajjar, for cremation.
