The illegal parking issue is once again the talking point in the city administration.
In a latest development, it has come to light that of the 21 parking lots owned by Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda), as many as 19 are being run by the mafia.
Huda administrator Praveen Kumar had asked his officials to chart out a list citing the status of all the parking lots on Huda land.
The list, submitted to the administrator on Tuesday, said that of the 21 facilities, only the one in Sector 14 is authorised.
There’s another parking space in Sector 29 that is entangled in a court case.
The status of all the other lots is not clear.
“The parking in front of Huda office in Sector 14 is authorised, the status of others is not on record. We don’t know if they are running officially or on their own. But they are definitely running on authority land,” said a senior Huda official.
The administrator had shot a letter on April 12 to both the estate officers (EO) seeking a detailed report on parking lots.
“You are requested to intimate as to whether any parking rent is being accepted from the agencies whose contract time expired by March 31, 2012,” states the letter.
The letter came in the wake of complaints that officials were collecting money from contractors whose contract had expired.
The letter indicates a big official-contractor nexus which HT has been regularly highlighting.
“Most of these parking sites are located at prime locations. Such acts cause heavy revenue loss to the government,” said another Huda official, hinting at a vigilance inquiry into the scandal. The administrator found several files related to parking missing from the estate offices. “I have asked the authorities concerned to bring those files,” said Huda administrator Praveen Kumar.
