The city police on Sunday night raided an illegal guesthouse, which had been running for months in Sector 38. During the raid, 11 foreign nationals were found staying in the guesthouse.
The accused, Jagdish Lohan, who is the owner of the guesthouse, is absconding.
According to the police, the guesthouse was being run from a residential premises and the owner had not submitted the necessary documents like copy of the passport and visas of the foreigners staying there, with the area police station, which is a mandatory formality.
Out of the 11 foreign nationals staying there, eight were from Iraq and three from Afghanistan.
Most of them are working in multi-national companies (MNCs) and have been verified by the police.
They had also submitted the necessary documents to the guesthouse owner.
“The guesthouse owner had not informed the local police about them, which is mandatory. The owner has also not maintained a daily record book besides not having permission to run the guesthouse in residential area,” said a police official.
The local residents were already opposing the illegal guesthouse in the area.
“We had earlier received a complaint by the residents against this guesthouse. We raided the premises on Sunday after we received another complaint. During the raid, the owner of the guesthouse Jagdish Lohan and his son Vikas Lohan were not present there,” added the police official.
When asked about the people living in the guesthouse, he said, “Most of them are working in MNCs and have got their police verification done. It was the guesthouse owner who violated the rules by not submitting their details with the local police station.”
“The accused is at large and we have booked Lohan under IPC. We will take action as per the law,” said Maheshwar Dayal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), East Gurgaon.
According to the district administration, guesthouses are not permitted to operate out of residential houses and colonies. At present, there are around 100 illegal guesthouses in the city.
Earlier this year, the District Town Planning Department (DTP) in a drive had sealed a number of such guesthouses operating in posh localities.
