This Sunday, people will be able to participate in Raahgiri Day, relaunched with a view to promote the use of sustainable transportation in the city.
As the numbers of road accidents have increased over the years, the initiative aims to encourage residents to adopt healthier lifestyle and reclaim the roads, the organisers said.
The day is a joint initiative of Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Gurgaon police and Raahagiri Foundation.
From 5 am to 9 am on Sunday, Sushant Lok Road near Galleria Block in Sector 27 will see various activities such as cycling, acrobatics, yoga, photography, taekwondo, skating, bhangra, zumba, tent pitching and hiking workshop, golf putting challenge, archery and badminton.
The Raahagiri Day, liked by both the young and the young at heart, had been an unprecedented success in the past, encouraging organisers to relaunch it. One day will be dedicated in a week, where people can hit the roads and claim it.
“It is a volunteer activity and people used to love the day, so we are planning to launch it again. The day is a welcome platform for people in Gurgaon to get to know each other as they are unable to do so because of busy lifestyle ,” said Abhishek Mishra, Ultraman, one of the organisers of the event.
The day will also spread awareness about using cycles to work and reduce carbon footprints. As rising pollution has been a major concern for authorities, the day will be celebrated to think of ways to reduce air pollution as well, claimed organisers of the event.
Sangeeta Kalra, a resident of Sector 30, said, “I am a regular at Raahagiri Day. I had fun with my friends and family and expect to experience the same magic again.”
The initiative was first started in Bogota, Colombia where enthusiasts have been holding Cyclovia for the past 20 years.
