‘Remove toll to make city a better trade hub’

The Sirhaul toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway is an impediment for the IT/BPO industry’s growth as the traffic bottleneck here causes delay and consumes significant man-hours.
This leads to a very tangible impact on the regular operations of the software and BPO companies, with many of these dealing with real-time international operations. There always remains a great degree of uncertainty in scheduling meetings and sticking to deadlines as most of the times, someone or the other from the company gets stuck at the toll plaza congestion.
Besides the day-to-day issues like our employee cabs getting stuck at the toll plaza and transporting employees late, there is another major concern here raised by the international clients.
When they visit here and have to face the congestion at the toll plaza soon after driving out of the international airport in Delhi, they raise doubts about the city’s infrastructure.
They are amazed by the contradiction posed by the city’s swanky office buildings on one hand and the absence of management on the expressway on the other. It comes as a rude shock to them when they see such aggressive levels of traffic indiscipline at the toll plaza with none around to restore order.
The whole ordeal not only creates a bad impression of the city, but also makes them re-consider furthering their investment here.
About 60 per cent of our employees commute from Delhi and have to face this horrible situation every day. The transport department at my company has now devised an alternative route for our cabs which try to enter Gurgaon through the Kapashera border instead of the Sirhaul toll plaza.
However, I believe such detours will not help in the long run. Gurgaon can be a better business destination if the Sirhaul toll plaza can be done away with.
Until then, the toll operator at least needs to manage it effectively.
The least they can do is ensure that those who use tags get the benefits of fast commuting and some monetary incentives, too.
It’s not financially feasible to lose on extra fuel when our cabs get stuck at the toll plaza for an abnormally long time.
