It was a routine weekend homecoming for 21-year-old Anil Kumar but little did the MBBS student knew that it would cost him a year of his education.
On Friday, Kumar was shot at by his uncle while he was trying to save his aunt from the assailant. Currently recuperating at a city hospital, Kumar is sure to miss his coming final year medical examinations. A student of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, Kumar is on heavy medication.
Kumar lives in the PGIMS hostel and visits his home at Rajiv Nagar on weekends. His aunt has been living with Kumar’s family for the past few years instead of her husband.
On Friday, Kumar’s uncle, Subedar Major Kuldeep Singh, along with his friend, went to Kumar’s house to get some pension documents signed by his wife. Instead of going himself, he asked a friend to get the papers signed, to which his wife refused.
Infuriated, Singh went in and had a heated argument with her. The situation went out of hand and he shot at her from his licensed pistol.
“My uncle had earlier also threatened me and my family members. He told us not to support his wife, or else we would have to face dire consequences. I had just returned from my hostel and was preparing for my practical tests which are scheduled on July 26. But I might not be able to go back now,” Kumar told HT.
“I was at a distance when I saw my uncle fire at my aunt. I tried to save her but he instead aimed at me. One of the bullets hit my leg,” said Kumar.
Satbir Singh, the father of the victim, said, “My son is an average student. It’s his final year and each day is important for his studies. He would lose this year because of this incident. He will be bed-ridden for the next six months.”
Dr. Naresh Pandit, who operated on Kumar, said, “Though we have taken out the bullet from his right leg, it has left a big hole in his bone. He lost a lot of blood.”
