It was meant to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and provide relief from the chronic traffic jams. However, the very first day of the traffic police’s plan of diverting traffic at Signature Tower Chowk witnessed snarls.
The traffic police made separate diversions for light and heavy vehicles from 7.30am to 11am. The experiment led to a few chaotic scenes even though there was not much traffic volume as it was a Saturday.
The traffic coming from Iffco Chowk — heading towards Rajiv Chowk through the expressway service lanes — was made to take a compulsory left turn at Signature Tower towards Huda City Centre Metro station.
Also, light vehicles were allowed to take a u-turn near Crowne Plaza — hardly 100 metre away from Signature Tower — to come back and merge with the expressway traffic. For heavy vehicles, a u-turn was allowed near Huda Gymkhana Club, some 300 metre from Signature Tower.
“The real test is on Monday. We are trying our best to implement the diversion plan,” said a senior official.
Similarly, on other side of the expressway, traffic coming from Rajiv Chowk and heading towards Iffco Chowk was made to take a compulsory left at Signature Tower towards Maharana Pratap Chowk.
The vehicles were then made to take u-turns. For light vehicles, a u-turn was allowed at a 100-metre distance from Signature Tower. For heavy vehicles, the u-turn was allowed at Maharana Pratap Chowk.
“There were traffic jams as heavy vehicles took longer time taking u-turns on both sides,” said a commuter.
