Tiles used in helipad for Modi’s November 1 visit to Gurgaon ‘stolen’
More than two lakh tiles used for construction of a helipad to land PM Narendra Modi’s chopper for his visit to Gurgaon have been stolenUpdated: Apr 27, 2017 10:41 IST
More than two lakh paver tiles, worth Rs15 lakh, used for construction of a helipad to land Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chopper for his visit to Gurgaon on November 1 last year have been stolen.
The helipad was constructed at Leisure Valley Ground using 2.88 lakh tiles at a cost of Rs 21.61 lakh, with each tile costing around Rs7.50. The tiles were meant to be in the possession of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) after the purpose of the helipad was served. Paver tiles are used for laying roads and are costlier than the tiles used to construct pavements.
An inquiry report has found that of the total 2.88 lakh tiles, 2.09 lakh are “unaccounted” for and are missing. Officials suspect the tiles have been stolen and the name of a local BJP leader has cropped up in official circles. The issue has been referred to the Gurgaon police and the vigilance department for further investigation.
The matter came to light after TL Satyaprakash, former MCG commissioner, visited the site in the second week of January and found the paver tiles missing.
He had ordered an inquiry, the report of which was submitted to present MCG commissioner V Umashankar a few days ago.
The report, sources said, has mentioned that of a total of 2.88 tiles, 79,000 tiles were used by MCG officials in an “unauthorised” manner at a street in Carterpuri area. There is no information on the remaining 2.09 lakh tiles. The officials who used some of the tiles for the street are also unaware of their whereabouts, the sources added.
“I have received the inquiry report. Further investigation in the matter will be held to find out where the tiles have gone,” Umashankar said.
Modi had come to Gurgaon on November 1 as the chief guest in the golden jubilee celebrations held at Tau Devi Lal stadium to mark 50 years of the formation of Haryana.
