Unaware of impending construction work blocking passage, commuters stranded near Iffco Chowk
A portion of Iffco Chowk has been rendered off-limits for the impending construction of an underpassUpdated: Apr 29, 2017 23:42 IST
Commuters taking the service lane of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, towards Signature Tower from Iffco Chowk, had a torrid time on Friday morning as they were caught unawares by the road rendered off-limits due to the impending construction of an underpass.
In the absence of barricading or signages to alert commuters, traffic was thrown out of gear and the artificial backlog delayed commuters by 15-20 minutes.
This led to chaos and confusion on the stretch as motorists were forced to veer into the wrong lane to exit the spot, and, in the process, merge with traffic taking the exit for the expressway.
“I take the MG Road and use the service lane for heading to my office near Signature Tower. I was completely caught unawares by the road blockage owing to the (impending) construction. As other vehicles were also stuck in the narrow space, I could only reverse my vehicle after waiting for five minutes. I could not exit the spot for want of enough space. I then queued up behind a long line of vehicles waiting to take the exit leading to the expressway and that resulted in a further 20-minute delay,” Saurabh Kukreja, a resident of Vasant Vihar, said.
The issue was resolved only around noon after a part of the blocked portion of the road was opened to let the vehicles pass through.
The service lane of the expressway draws commuters aplenty, as it affords a smooth passage from Iffco Chowk to Signature Tower and leads to crossings towards Leisure Valley and parts of Sector 29.
The service lane is used by commuters travelling from Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road and those travelling on the expressway.
Those heading from MG Road use the lane on way to the expressway, while those travelling from the expressway use it for reaching Leisure Valley or as an alternative road towards the Iffco Chowk or DLF Phase 4 metro stations, as it helps them avoid the traffic near the Signature Tower.
For many commuters, the delay was another setback to their travel plans. The construction of the three underpasses on the stretch has disrupted traffic over weeks now.
“Each week brings a new challenge for those travelling on the expressway. One is faced with constant route changes as he has to deal with traffic diversions and barricades for construction work. The situation on Friday was just the latest instance of the chaos,” Samarth Gupta, a resident of Heritage City, said.
