A 1.2km underpass between DLF Phase 1 metro station and Global Foyer mall will open to traffic on a trial basis on Sunday.
The underpass, along with the recently opened Sikanderpur underpass, is expected to reduce the travel time of office goers and residents on the Golf Course road and also bring about uniformity in traffic flow.
The opening of the underpass comes two days after the second phase (South Extension) of the Rapid Metro opened to public, providing increased public transport to employees of MNCs and corporate offices located on the Golf Course Road. The additional road infrastructure is expected to reduce traffic congestion on the stretch.
The new six-lane underpass (three on each side) is going to benefit commuters travelling towards or from Golf Course Extension Road and those living in gated condominiums of DLF Phase 5 as it will enable them to avoid merging with traffic headed towards DLF Phase 1 and DLF Phase 4.
Abhishek Dayal, a resident of Nirvana Country, commutes to Cyber City for work and takes the Golf Course Road and Golf Course Extension Road since the Sikanderpur underpass opened last month.
He said avoiding the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway has helped him cut down on travel time and the new underpass will further reduce time spent on the road.
“I travel during the late evening hours and often get stuck in the heavy traffic movement on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Since the opening of the Sikanderpur underpass on Golf Course Road, my travel time has halved. The new underpass will be an added benefit,” Abhishek said.
Once the new underpass too is operational, DLF officials claim that the travel time to clear the stretch will reduce from 10-15 minutes to less than five.
“This underpass project has been undertaken as a part of the larger infrastructure upgradation of the 8.3km long Golf Course Road. The underpass starts from DLF Phase 1 Metro station and extends to Global Foyer mall, allowing the commuters to bypass the heavily congested areas. This will drastically cut travel time and also uniformly distribute traffic, providing relief to commuters,” a DLF spokesperson said.
The two underpasses have been built on Golf Course Road by DLF and Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda ) at a cost of over Rs200 crore.
It is a part of the 8.3km under-construction 16 lane, signal-free project between sector 55/56 to Shankar Chowk that is expected to be completed by the last quarter of 2017.
