For Omvati, sarpanch of Bar Gujar village, deterring villagers from stealing electricity and getting them to pay electricity bills was an uphill task. She, however, made an impact in the village in a year with the help of the administration. The cumulative efforts led to reduction in power transmission and distribution (T&D) losses from 36% to 18% in the village.

The efforts of sarpanch were rewarded when she was felicitated at the district level Independence Day celebrations in Gurgaon on Monday.

“It is honour for our village. Other villages should also follow the norms,” Omvati said.

Pradeep Yadav, sapranch of nearby Naurangpur village, was also felicitated for similar efforts.

The villages now have no outstanding power dues. New electric meters are installed on poles and defective meters have been replaced in the villages. Besides, low tension wires have been replaced with cables and electricity theft has been nullified.

Haryana finance minister Captain Abhimanyu Singh, chief guest of the function at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, handed over felicitation certificates to sarpanches.

A power discom official said T&D losses in the feeder supplying electricity to these villages are on the decline and it is expected to slide down to 15%. Electricity supply in the villages has also been increased from 12 hours to 21 hours.

The minister also honoured 50 gram panchayats, 23 gram secretaries, and six other people for making villages open defecation free under the Swachh Bharat mission. Four panchayats were given Rs1 lakh under Swarn Jayanti Swachhta Award. Aklimpur gram panchayat of Sohna block was given an additional Rs 1 lakh for being judged the cleanest panchayat.

The minister awarded 75 people, including government employees, for exemplary services in their respective fields and departments. Singh also awarded parade teams, and school students who performed at the function. He also honoured freedom fighters and widows of freedom fighters by presenting shawls.

He announced a holiday for all Gurgaon schools on August 15. Before attending the function, Singh paid obeisance to unidentified martyrs at the war memorial at Freedom Fighters District Council, Civil Lines.

Committee formed for 7th pay commission

At the function, Singh announced that the state government has formed a committee for providing benefits to government employees at par with the Central government employees under the 7th pay commission. He said the committee would submit a report within two months. Singh informed that the government has provisioned Rs 4,000 crore for the purpose in the current state budget.
