A technical fault at the Chandu Budhera plant and a burst in the master water pipeline from Basai treatment plant crippled the water supply across the city on Sunday. A senior official of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) said that they were working on repairing both the faults but the supply is likely to remain erratic on Monday too.
A Huda official said the operation at Chandu Budhera plant stopped at 2 on Sunday morning because of a technical glitch, which disrupted power supply. The plant remained non-operational throughout the day and it is likely to impact the water situation on Monday. This plant supplies around 15 MGD water to households in Gurgaon every day.
The supply problem was compounded by the burst in Huda’s master pipeline in Basai on Saturday night between 11 to 11.30pm. As a result of the fault, water treatment at Basai was discontinued so water could be drained from the pipeline and it could be repaired at the earliest.
Huda official Vijender Malik said that as soon as they got information about the leak, they started the work and an earthmover, generator and welding machines were moved to the site.
“We will repair the leakage by late evening and ensure that the water supply is normalized as soon as possible,” said Malik, who was at the spot directing the repair work.
While the problem at Basai plant is likely to be rectified by late Sunday or Monday morning, power could not be restored at Chandu Budhera water treatment plant, which went down after some poles fell, snapping the power lines.
Officials said the storm, which hit the city on Saturday night, damaged the poles.
Basai supplies around 60 MGD water to Gurgaon. The plant has a capacity of 350 MGD and for emergency, another 290 MGD is stored at the plant. It supplies water to Sector 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 27, 28, 29, 40, 41.
The issue of power outages has been a recurrent problem at both Chandu Budhera and Basai water treatment plants throughout the summer. Due to frequent tripping at these plants, the treatment of water has had to be stopped causing water shortage in Gurgaon during peak summer season. Though Huda plans to install an advanced system to get rid of tripping, no work has started on the plan at ground level.
