The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to start the construction of an underpass and a flyover on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway near Ambience Mall in October. The work is scheduled to be completed in 18 months. These two long-awaited passages are planned to put an end to traffic jams at Shankar Chowk and the defunct Sirhaul toll plaza.
In the absence of safe passages such as an underpass or a flyover, commuters face difficulties in crossing the Expressway from the side of the Udyog Vihar to that of Ambience Mall and vice versa. The underpass would give a safe passage to commuters wanting to reach Ambience Mall, DLF Phase-3, and main the carriageway of the Expressway to head towards Manesar.
At present, in order to reach Ambience Mall, DLF Phase-3 or the Cyber City, private vehicles have to travel towards Rajokri and take a U-turn under the flyover, while commercial vehicles have to pay the Delhi municipal tax.
The underpass would come up on the Expressway at Dhanchiri camp, near the landing point of the Rajokri flyover, while the flyover that would come up at Shankar Chowk can be used by commuters of DLF Phase-3, Ambience Mall and the Cyber City to reach Udyog Vihar and head towards Delhi via Sirhaul toll plaza.
The NHAI is likely to grant this big-ticket project to a suitable construction company by mid September.
“We are opening the bidding process on August 20 and, in next the couple of weeks, we will assign the work to a selected company. The project is slated to be completed by February 2020, within 18 months from the award of the project . The total cost of the project is Rs 164 crore. The flyover and the underpass will bring an end to the difficulties in highway crossing,” said Ashok Sharma, project director and general manager, NHAI, Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
The residents and city commuters have waited for five long years for this project to see the light of the day. A series of meetings took place in this regard between the officials of the NHAI and local authorities.
“It is true that this facility is long pending. Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari asked the NHAI in August 2017 to expedite the pending proposal and start construction. We are happy that construction work is finally starting,” said Ashok Kohli, president, Chamber of Industries, Udyog Vihar.
