He’s only 26, but already has a body of work that speaks volumes of his talent. But actor Emile Hirsch likes to stay grounded and believes in choosing films that bring out the ‘actor’ in him.
Hirsch, who has acted in popular movies such as The Girl Next Door, Alpha Dog, Into the Wild and Milk, will next be seen in The Darkest Hour.
“The script for The Darkest Hour caught a tone that I really liked what I thought I’d be able to bring something to the film as an actor. There are many science fiction movies that are heavily about the concept and where there’s not a lot of room for actors to do much... but there was kind of a perfect mix for me because there was enough actor stuff to do in this action thriller,” says the actor, who plays Sean, an upstart young software developer dispatched to Moscow, where he’s caught in the middle of an alien invasion.
“One of the things I really like about the film is that it employs light bulbs for these alarm signals that the aliens are coming... so there’s this horror element but also has futuristic sci-fi element of using electronics to your advantage, so suddenly you know a car radio turns on and you’re like, Ok, there’s something bad over there,” says Hirsch.
Not many know that Hirsch is a sci-fi movie buff. “The Matrix is my favourite science fiction movie, and I also loved Independence Day and 2001: A Space Odyssey,” he says.
