Oscars nominations 2018: Guillermo del Toro’s Shape of Water received the highest number of nominations followed by Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk

Oscars 2018 nominations have left people stunned. From Meryl Streep being nominated for the 21st time, Greta Gerwig becoming the fifth female director to be nominated under Best Direction category to cinematographer Rachel Morrison becoming the first female nominee under Best Cinematography category - a lot of happened during the 30 minutes nominations hosted by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis.

Shape of Water did emerge as the most nominated film with 13 nominations, closely followed by Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. Surprisingly, Hugh Jackman’s superhero film Logan also featured in the nominees list under Best Adapted Screenplay category.

#OscarsSoWhite had once been a serious discussion as to how The Academy’s nominees happened to be white. In 2017, the victory of Hidden Figures, Moonlight and Fences in different categories broke this practice and in continuation this year we saw, Mary J. Blige nominated for Best Supporting actor Female for her performance in Mudbound. Octavia Spencer for her performance in Shape of Water.

Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out and Denzel Washington for Roman J. Israel, Esq. were also nominated under Best Actor Male category.

6:50 pm: The nominations for Oscars 2018 begins with a look back at the past 89 years of the award ceremony. John Bailey begins by saying, “Actors, directors producers have not just given us films that entertain us but challenge us.” He then welcomed the hosts, Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis.

6:56 pm: The categories were introduced by short videos and so the Production Design category video starred, Gal Gadot and the nominees are - Beauty and the Beast, Blade Runner 49, Dunkirk, The Darkest Hour and Shape of Water.

07:00 pm: The second category - Best Cinematography had a video starring Priyanka Chopra and the nominees are - Blade runner 2049, The Darkest Hour, Mudbound, Shape of Water.

The third category - Best Costumer designing video starred Salma Hayek and the nominees are Beauty and the Beast, Darkest Hour, Shape of Water and Victoria and Abdul.

The fourth category for Best Sound Mixing and Sound editing had a promo video starring Zoe Saldana and the nominees for Sound editing are Baby Driver, Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk, The Shape of Water, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

07:05 pm: The fourth category was Animated short film had a promo video featuring Rebel Wilson and the nominees are Dear Basketball, Garden Party, Lou, Negative Space, Revolting Rhymes.

The fifth category was for Live Action Short Film and the nominees were DeKalb Elementary, The Eleven O’Clock, My Nephew Emmett, The Silent Child, Watu Wote

The sixth category was for Best Original Score with a video featuring Michelle Rodriguez and the nominees in this category were Dunkirk, Phantom Thread, The Shape of Water, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Three Billboards

7:10 pm: The seventh category was for Best Visual Effects and the introduction video featured Michelle Yeoh. The nominees in this category are Blade Runner 2049, Guardians of the Galaxy, Kong, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, War for the Planet of the Apes.

The eighth category was for Best Make Up and Styling, and the promo video featured Rosario Dawson. The nominees in this category are Darkest Hour, Victoria Abdul, Wonder.

After a break, the hosts came back to announce Best Supporting Actor Female and the nominees were Mary J. Blige, Allison Janney, Lesley Manville, Laurie Metcalf, Octavia Spencer.

The Best Supporting actor Male nominees were Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins, Christopher Plummer, Sam Rockwell.

7:15 pm: The nominees for Best Foreign Language film is A Fantastic Woman, The Insult, Loveless, Body and Soul, The Square.

Then came the nominees for Best Documentary Short. They are Edith Eddie, Heaven is a Traffic Jam, Heroin(e), Knifeskills, Traffic Stop.

The Best Song nominees are Mighty River, Mystery of Love, Remember Me, Stand Up for Something, This Is Me.

Then came the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film - Boss Baby, Bread Winner, Coco, Ferdinand, Loving Vincent.

Adapted Screenplay nominees for the year were Call Me By Your Name, The Disaster Artist, Logan, Molly’s Game, Mudbound.

The nominees for Original screenplay were The Big Sick, Get Out, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards.

7:20 pm: The Best Actor nominees had everyone cheering as the nominees for Male actor were Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya, Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington. For Best Actor Female , the nominees were, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep.

The Best Director category nominees are Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro.

Then when it came to the Best Film category, Tiffany hesitated, quipped if Andy wanted to take over and then we heard the nine films that were selected as nominees. Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape of Water, Three Billboard made it to the list.
